TV Series Review: Stranger Things

Hello Everyone!

As you may or may not know, I have a slight obsession with TV shows and have seen TONS of series so I thought I would start doing some reviews for you all! I’m always looking for TV show reviews to help me decide what to watch next, so hopefully this will help you! Netflix came out with Stranger Things on July 15th and let me tell you, I’ve heard tons of people ranting and raving about this show. I just had to watch it and review it for you all.

The show takes place in the 80s and centers around Will Byers, a missing child in the town of Hawkins. Will’s friends and family are distraught at his disappearance and do everything they can in an attempt to find him. At the same time a strange girl is found in the forest; a girl with many of her own supernatural powers. Thunder crackling. Lights flickering. This show is the definition of creepy, and I loved every second of it!

It’s eerie and dark and edgy and a must watch! To be honest I thought it would be a little lame with the supernatural component, however it was done really well and wasn’t overbearing. I’m tired of the whole vampire/werewolf thing and this was a breath of fresh sci-fi air. For all of you romance lovers out there, don’t fear, there’s a wonderful love triangle-ish thing that will keep your heart content.

The acting is incredible considering half of the main characters are preteens. When I was that age I couldn’t even fake sick to my mom to let me stay home from school, let alone pretend to be a girl with telekinesis powers that was raised in a laboratory. I think Winona Ryder’s acting truly took the cake with her performance as Joyce Byers, Will’s mom. I have never really seen any of her other work, but have a whole new respect for her after watching her heart wrenching performance as a distraught mother.

Overall I’m giving this show a well-deserved 4.5/5. I can guarantee that when season 2 comes out I’ll be binge-watching it like it’s going out of style.

My Summer Beauty Favourites

Hello Everyone!

This summer I really found myself reaching for the same products which are now empty. I figured if I loved them so much, I might as well make a post about it sharing these products with you all!

First is my 310 Cali #2 bronzer tanning lotion. I’m very fair and don’t normally tan, or when I do I come out looking like a giant lobster, and so I wanted to try finding a product that would help with that. I went to my local tanning salon and they sold me this tanning lotion and I absolutely love it! I used it before tanning outside and I have to say this is the first summer that I’ve barely burned and actually got colour. People keep complimenting me on my tan which has never happened to me before believe it or not. Definitely something I’m going to repurchase!

Since I had a tan, I didn’t really put on a lot of foundation as I just don’t have any to match my current skin colour and I prefer a more natural beauty look in the summertime. However, this did not stop me from wanting to get my glow on! I’m definitely a dewy skin lover and to get my glow I’d pop on some L’oreal True Match Lumi Liquid Glow Illuminator on a beauty blender and go to town on my cheekbones!

The next product I wanted to talk about is Maybelline’s Fit Me Set + Smooth powder. I tend to get a bit oily around my T zone in the summer with all of the sunscreen and moisturizer I apply, and so I needed something to tame my nose oil. This powder was amazing! I even use this when my skin is super dry and it doesn’t cling to my dry patches and make my skin feel even tighter.

Lastly, I pretty much used a Wet n Wild blush that I no longer have the name for, but you can refer to the swatch above to see the colour. It adds such a soft pinky glow that looks so natural and beautiful for the summer! It also has flicks of sparkles in it to add a little more glow to your skin.

Let me know in the comments what your favourite summer beauty products are!

5 Last Minute Summer Activities

Hello Everyone!

If you're anything like me, you're looking at the calendar and wondering where the heck the summer months went. It's almost the end of August and all you've done is sit on your couch binge watching Buffy The Vampire Slayer on Netflix! So you forgot to rent a cottage and campsite back in April, we've all been there, but I'm here to be your summer fairy godmother and tell you that there's still lots of time left to make this summer memorable. Here's a list of some last minute things you can do to have fun before the summer is over:

  1. Drinks on the patio:There's nothing more summery than a pitcher of margaritas and your best gal pals hanging out at a restaurant patio. The best part is you can do this any night...or morning/afternoon. I don't judge. For a more affordable option, grab a bottle of margarita mix at your local store (split the price between each person) and host a cocktail hour in your own backyard.
  2. Spend the day at your local beach: You might not have time to rent a cottage or a campsite, but that shouldn't stop you from spending your final days of summer by the water. Find the closest lake to you, pack a cooler full of snacks, and make a day out of it. Even if it's a long drive time, nothing screams summer more than a road trip, which brings me to my next idea,
  3. Plan a spontaneous road trip. Take a couple days off of work (or you could call in sick, again, judge free zone) and plan a spontaneous road trip to that place you've always wanted to go with your favourite person. It doesn't have to be a long trip to be a fun one. No hotels left? Not a problem! Here's a link teaching you how to sleep comfortably in your car in a Walmart parking lot: http://themorningfresh.com/2012/06/29/a-guide-to-car-camping-in-walmart-parking-lots/
  4. Watch a movie at the drive-in: This is a more affordable option if you're looking to have some summer fun on a budget. To save extra money head to a bulk store and buy your own snacks!
  5. Go to an outdoor concert. Enjoy the warm weather and some good music! Check your local theaters to see who's touring in your area.
These are just some of the summer activities you can do on short notice. Hopefully this helps you make this summer one to remember! If you can think of more activities, leave a comment in the comments section below!

Get To Know Me

Hello Everyone!

I never really make posts about my life and what's currently going on with me and so I decided to do just that. I think it's a great way for you all to get to know me and keep up with my life if you want to. This will just be a super generic post about some major things in my life/what I'm doing.

I'm heading in to my fourth year of university this fall in the Brain and Cognition program. I'm not a makeup artist and I'm not trying to become one; I'm just a science student with a passion for beauty products. I'm hoping to head to med school within the next couple of years so we'll see how that goes! If any of you are premed or want to talk about anything science/med school related let me know!

Me trying to be artsy while studying for exams

I've spent most of my summer studying for the MCAT and volunteering in a lab at my university which has been amazing! I never thought I'd like doing research that much but turns out I quite like it. Finding a lab that would take me on as a volunteer was quite difficult so if you're in the same position don't feel bad about it! Just keep contacting as many people as possible and something will come up.

I'm a huge animal lover! I currently have three cats and recently got a new german shepherd puppy whom I love dearly. His name is Colt and he's the apple of my eye. I've always dreamed about opening up my own animal shelter but that'll be in the very far future if I ever can afford it.

How can I resist those puppy dog eyes?

So after all that, I'd like to hear more about you! Tell me one thing about yourself in the comments section below.

Homemade Coffee Face Mask

Hello Everyone!

Recently I've been using a homemade coffee mask and I loved it so much that I wanted to share it with you all! Believe it or not all you need is coffee grinds, plain yogurt, and honey. The coffee grinds act as a great exfoliator and minimizes inflammation and redness. This mask is also perfect for dry skin as both the yogurt and honey act as great natural moisturizers.

First you're going to take the coffee grinds and add enough yogurt to create a paste-like consistency. Once you've got your paste, add in a dollop of honey and mix it in until you get the mask to a perfect creamy texture. You can play around with the quantities since all of the ingredients are wonderful for your skin, that you really can't overdo it with any of them. What you're looking for is the perfect consistency for application. What I do is try out the mask on my face, and if I find its too thick to apply I'll add more yogurt until it reaches a smooth consistency.

Once you've got the perfect texture, use a brush to apply it to your face and let it sit for 30 minutes. Enjoy your youthful and glowy skin!

Leave a comment below if you try this mask and tell me what you think!

Maybelline's The Rock Nudes Eyeshadow Palette

Hey Everyone!

I had the best long weekend at my cottage and arrived back home yesterday morning. I absolutely love being able to spend some time during the summer up at the cottage! The days are responsibility-free and are loaded with lots of eating, swimming, more eating, and campfires. How can anyone hate that?

Before I left I tried out a couple of looks using Maybelline's The Rock Nudes eyeshadow palette and I wanted to review it for you all. You know I'm all about saving money and finding good quality products for cheap so I was really hoping this palette would work out. I got this palette as a gift and when I first saw it I thought the colours were gorgeous. They even have some unique colours like a sparkly teal and a deep plum purple for anyone who wants to adventure out and create a more bold eye look.

One of the most helpful features of the palette is the info they provide you with on the back. There's 3 different ways in which you can categorize the eyeshadows in the palette, and there are diagrams to help you figure out colour placement on the eye. Very helpful if you're new with makeup and not really sure what to do. Of course if you're more advanced you can easily just create your own look with whatever colours you choose.

Now it's time to get to the actual product! I found most of the colours to be pretty pigmented and blendable, but some were also chalky and clumpy. The lighter shades in the palette tend to be chalky and not easy to work with, while some of the darker shades can create quite a bit of fallout. For a drugstore eyeshadow palette I do have to say that I'm pretty impressed with it. The eyeshadow formula isn't the greatest, however for the price you're paying you can create quite a few wearable looks.

Here's the look I created up close and in different lighting:

I created this look by applying the white shade from lash line to brow bone and then used the top brown shade (#4) as my transition colour. I then deepened the outer V with a touch of the black shade and finally used the sparkly light shade (#7) on my lid. I then used the black shadow to create the wing instead of using eye liner.

Let me know if any of you pick up this palette and tell me what you think! Should I try out the other palettes in the collection?

2 Looks With The Naked 2 Palette

Hello Everyone!

I hope you all had wonderful weekends! I spent most of my weekend with my aunt and grandmother who both live together. I don’t get to see them a lot since I’m usually away for school and so I decided it would be nice to see them. I was able to create two looks this weekend with my naked 2 palette that I wanted to share with you!

First is a simple neutral look that I absolutely adore for everyday wear. I wore this on Saturday as I spent most of my day with my aunt downtown and wanted something that wasn’t too crazy or glam.

I mainly used foxy (all over my eyelid and up to my brow bone) as well as tease (in my crease) to create this look! I also used half-baked to highlight my inner corner. The only product I used for this that wasn't from the urban decay palette was a transition shade from a drugstore palette. It's basically a very pale pinky/orange colour, so you can substitute that for anything you have in your collection that looks similar.

This was my full face of makeup from that day. I love to keep my makeup simple and natural for the summer months with some glow to have the appearance of healthy looking skin. (Check my last post to see what I use to get my summer glow!)

The second look I did was more of a glittery glam look!

For this look I still used my usual foxy and tease, however I used half-baked on the inner portion of my lid and then I used chopper on the middle. I wish you could see the colour distinction better but hopefully you get the idea!

How did you spend your weekend? Leave a comment below and let me know!
